Madrid Innovation District: What Real Madrid Is Building Beyond Football

Real Madrid is best known for what happens on the pitch, but the club has also been thinking about what it can build off it. One of the biggest examples is the Madrid Innovation District (MID), a technology hub planned on land at Real Madrid City.

The agreement

Real Madrid and the Community of Madrid have signed a collaboration protocol to create the district. The signing took place at Real Madrid City, with the club's Director of Institutional Relations, Emilio Butragueño, the Community of Madrid's Minister for Digitalisation, Miguel López-Valverde, and the President of the Madrid Business Confederation, Miguel Garrido.

What is planned

The site covers 120 hectares, and 85 of them are set aside for innovation, research, new technology and attracting talent. The idea is a place where companies, institutions, athletes, entrepreneurs and residents share the same space. Both sides will work to bring companies and research organisations to the district, together with education and research centres focused on digital skills, artificial intelligence and data.

The numbers

According to a report by the consulting firm PwC:

• Building the district would mean around €1.3 billion of investment and more than 4,700 jobs.
• Once running, it would add about €1.2 billion a year to the region's GDP.
• It would support more than 23,000 jobs a year.

Why a football club is doing this

The project fits a pattern. Under Florentino Pérez, Real Madrid has invested in the new Bernabéu, in Real Madrid City and in the Real Madrid Foundation, treating the club as an institution with a role in its city, not only a team. The MID takes that idea further, linking the club's name to research and technology.

For fans far from Madrid, it is another sign that the club is planning for decades ahead, not just the next season. We will follow how the project develops and share updates here.
